Yet another Nintendo Direct has come and gone with no word on the mystical and enigmatic sequel to 2001’s Super Smash Brothers Melee. Instead, Nintendo opted to issue a grave warning to its fans about the impending destruction of civilization and the death of humanity.
Nintendo announced a new entry to the Smash series at their Nintendo Direct on March 8th, citing that it will coming to the Nintendo Switch sometime in 2018. However, the symbolism in its teaser trailer tells a story of death and destruction, that Nintendo clearly fears is coming soon.
The first 30 seconds of the video depicts two inklings, representative of humanity, battling it out using their signature ink-spraying weaponry. Everything appears to be in good fun, it’s a competitive fight, but neither of the two inklings are taking it too seriously.
Suddenly, everything changes. Darkness quickly besets the playful battleground and brings a swift end to the fight. The orange inkling turns around and beholds a blazing fire, arranged in the iconic Smash insignia. The inkling is awestruck by it; fearful and questioningly she stares at it as it reflects back ominously in her eyes. Then, she notices the mysterious figures beneath it whose demeanor match the apocalyptic backdrop behind them. The horsemen of the apocalypse.
We, humanity, are the inklings.
Like the inklings, the onset of our destruction will come unforeseen and without warning. Does the Nintendo know something we don’t? It’s not certain, but it sure seems like it. The company has offered humanity a lifeline: prepare for the end or you too, will be caught off guard.
Run for your life, dear reader.
